Some food combinations are so popular that they deserve their own name.
In Korea, fried chicken and beer are known as chimac.
The word combines chikin, the Korean pronunciation of chicken, with maekju, the Korean word for beer. It describes more than an order. Chimac is the feeling of sitting with friends on a summer evening, sharing chicken, pouring cold drinks and staying at the table far longer than planned.
This July, that pairing took centre stage at the Daegu Chimac Festival.
The 2026 festival ran from 1 to 5 July in and around Duryu Park in Daegu. Its programme included chicken, music, evening events, sing-alongs and areas where visitors could enjoy the festival atmosphere after the heat of the day.
It sounds like the organisers understood the assignment.
Daegu is well known for its hot summers, which has helped make the city a fitting home for a festival based around food, cold drinks and late-night fun.
Rather than hiding from the temperature, the festival turns it into part of the occasion.
People arrive as the evening begins. Friends gather around tables. Chicken is shared. Drinks are poured. Music plays and the park fills with groups enjoying the summer night.
The food matters, but the company matters just as much.
That is a theme found across Korean dining culture. Meals are rarely treated as something to rush. Sharing dishes gives everyone a reason to stay, talk and order one more plate.
Chimac is easy to understand.
The chicken is hot, crisp and salty. The drink is cold and refreshing. One makes you reach for the other.
The pairing has become a familiar part of Korean social life, particularly during sport, warm evenings and informal gatherings with friends.
It does not require a formal occasion. That is part of the appeal.
You can meet after work, gather your classmates, invite your housemates or turn a quiet evening into an unplanned group meal.
